Big News: Visitors to DC Can Now Go to Medical Cannabis Dispensaries
Big news for cannabis patients visiting Washington, D.C.
Last week, Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a bill permitting non-residents to self-certify as medical cannabis patients when they visit the city. A doctor’s recommendation is no longer required, but you do need valid, government-issued photo ID in order to register and make purchases. DC residents over 21 can already self-certify.
Does this mean DC finally has an adult use/recreational market?
Not quite. Right now, the DC budget is under congressional control. That means they approve our spending, and congress does not want the city using local tax dollars to launch a regulated adult-use marketplace.
To give visitors to the city access to medical cannabis and to work around the limitations set in place by congress, Mayor Muriel Bowser presented a bill to ensure that patients visiting the city can obtain a 30-day registration to purchase cannabis from licensed medical dispensaries. The bill passed unanimously in the D.C. council and took effect in late September 2022.
What does this mean for people visiting the city?
If you’re visiting DC and you want to self-certify first, make sure that you have valid, government-issued ID that shows that you are at least 21 years of age. Then apply online and pay a non-refundable $30 fee.
