Norbert Pickett Cultivates Community, Culture and Cannabis
In August 2019, Norbert Pickett opened Cannabliss in the Deanwood neighborhood of Washington, D.C., becoming the first and only black man to be the sole owner of a dispensary in the District. Winning a medical cannabis license is not an easy task, but that didn’t intimidate Pickett who was used to taking on big challenges and finding a way through obstacles.
In 2012, after being rear ended in an automobile accident, Pickett found himself with injuries so severe they resulted in permanent disability. After 18 spinal procedures and 5 major spinal surgeries he had to learn how to walk again while trying to manage chronic pain with a myriad of prescription narcotics and opioids. In his quest to find relief, Pickett discovered the benefits of THC and was able to wean himself off addictive narcotics.
That was the turning point that started his journey to open Cannabliss. He realized that he wanted to make cannabis available to all patients seeking a better quality of life at a more affordable price.
A year and a half after opening, Cannabliss is much more than a medical cannabis dispensary, it is a job creator in the Ward 7 community and a healthcare hub that will only be enhanced with the opening of a Safe Use Space and Cultivation Center. For Pickett, this is all part of his commitment to reinvest in the community:
“Our General Manager is from Ward 7 and several of the staff live in Deanwood,” he said. “I wanted to make sure the community was involved and that I was creating opportunities for women and people of color.”
Today Cannabliss employs 15 team members from the DMV. Cannabliss is the first and only dispensary in the District to Unionize it’s employees with UFCW Local 400 and seeks to create additional jobs with the goal of being vertically integrated.
The Ward 7 dispensary focuses on whole body wellness - physical, mental, social and spiritual - with the goal of helping people heal from trauma and pain in a holistic environment.
Cannabliss was voted 2nd for Washington City Paper’s “Best of DC” Dispensaries last year after having been open only 6 months! Stop by and see what sets them apart.
